Hacking the NAVI

Introduction

The 2005 Honda Accord comes with a GPS Navigation system running Windows CE. The system is run off of a DVD in the trunk that contains the yellow pages for the entire country.

The NAVI is incredibly useful for both trips across country and across town. However, one slightly annoying element is the Nag screen that comes up every time I start the car. It displays a disclaimer that the instructions may not  be right so I really need to think for myself. It pauses for a moment to give ample time to read the disclaimer and then required me to press the Okay button to continue.

This project aims to get rid of this nag screen and, for extra credit, change the boot splash screen to something more appealing. I'll be using instructions found on the internet and copied in part here.

Instructions

  1. From the main menu, hold down the Map/Guide, Menu, and Cancel button for 5 seconds.
  2. Select the Version button on the touch screen.
  3. Hold down the Menu button for 5 seconds.
  4. Write down the filename next to the words "Loading Filename" (ex: BN2HH120.BIN).
  5. Open the trunk and find the DVD player attached to the  navigation system.
  6. Push down the front plate and eject the navigation DVD-ROM.
  7. Place the DVD in your computer and copy all 9 BIN files onto your hardrive.
  8. Run the Dump NAVI application.
  9. Click browse and select the BIN file that you wrote down in step 4 and that you copied to disk.
  10. Select the image that you would like to use.
  11. Click the modify button. The program will notify you when it is done.

  12. Copy the modified BIN file, including the other BIN files (9 in total) to a  blank CD or DVD.
  13. Insert the original navigation DVD back into the DVD-ROM in your car.
  14. Start the car normally, and at the main navigation hold Map/Guide, Menu, and Cancel for 5 seconds.
  15. Hit the Version  button on the touch screen once again.
  16. Take the original navigation DVD out of the car and  replace it with the CD/DVD you just created.
  17. Hit the "Load Disc" button the version screen.
  18. It should take about 20 seconds for your car to load the new BIN and reboot.
  19. When it is done, take out the new CD/DVD and put back in the original.
  20. If anything goes wrong, remove the ground to the battery for 30 seconds with the original DVD in the car. The old OS will load back on the system.

Work

I followed the instructions and had very few problems.

I used the following image for my load screen:

When the DVD was replaced with the new CD with the modified files, the system rebooted. After reboot, the system complained that the DVD was unavailable... but I was able to hold down the three buttons and enter diagnostics and continue with the instructions.

I was somewhat disappointed in the results. The loader worked fine, but after that there is still a blank screen where a button appears that says "Go" that must be clicked before the map loads.

Conclusion

Everything went well, even though the results weren't quite as good as I'd hoped. I really wanted the GPS Mapping System to load immediately, but I still have to click a button. If I was going to repeat the process I would probably not remove the nag screen because now it looks really empty.

Nevertheless, the operation was fun and it was interesting to get inside of the 2005 Honda Accord GPS Navigation system.
